As most of us already know, a map is a model of the world around us. A map in general, is a "picture" of our world. Maps depict certain features, such as cities, towns and streets. Maps could include features like mountains and rivers or all of these combined. Maps are usually drawn on, or made using paper, but long ago they could have been made from clay or cloth.

Globes are a map that have been made to represent the world and its continents and countries in a three dimensional way, as opposed to a flat map. Globes are round in shape and you can usually spin them to see the various continents and oceans.

Maps are a valuable tool when learning about other countries and subjects like geography. They are also very important when traveling or planning a trip. Maps aided the early explorers, long ago, in finding places other explorers had already discovered or helped in discovering new places in the world. One great thing about maps is that they probably helped these early explorers in finding their way back!

Maps have been around for thousands of years and thanks to Hubpages, maps have become an easily accessed source for everyone to use online today. Maps are a great tool for kids to learn about the world around them!

One of the oldest maps created was a map made out of clay of the city or state of Babylon, in the 9th century BC. Ancient Greece was possibly the first civilization to create a world map around 600 to 500 BC.

There are various types of maps, but usually maps fall into a category of either physical maps, that show geographical features of the land or political maps, that show the borders of each country.

There are a wide variety of maps that we use every day. We use street maps or road maps, atlases (collections of maps), globes and topographical maps, just to name a few.
