Are Dolphins Smarter Than Humans?

Dolphins
I think dolphins are an amazingly interesting mammal. They are said to be one of the most intelligent animals on our planet. Did you know that dolphins are said to sleep using only one part of their brain? They use one hemisphere of their brain to go into a deep sleep, while the another part of their brain remains more aware to enable them to breathe and stay alert for danger.
Dolphins have great eyesight above or below water. Their hearing is excellent too and up to ten times better than human hearing. They incorporate their lower jaw bones as part of their hearing but have similar inner or middle ear structures as any other mammal. They also use their hearing similar to bats for echolocation, which is like radar. Dolphins are believed to not have a sense of smell, but do have a good sense of taste and feed on their favorite fish or squid.
In dolphins, they have discovered "spindle cells" which are a unique neuron, known to be only in the brains of mammals of higher intelligence. They are usually only found in humans, certain types of apes, elephants and whales.
Schools of dolphins are usually called pods and can range in numbers to as many as hundreds or much more. They will often group together and cooperate to "round up" schools of small fish to eat.
There are many places that people can actually go and interact with dolphins in their own ocean environment. I have personally seen this in the Key West area a few years ago. I have heard of many stories of how dolphins have attacked sharks in what seems to be a rescue attempt when swimmers or surfers are threatened by the sharks.
I think that dolphins should be treated with the utmost of respect, not only for being a fellow inhabitant of our planet but also until we can establish just how intelligent our friends from the sea are!

I think dolphins are very beautiful creatures! I knew they were smart but didn't know all that I learned from this hub about them. I would love to pet one some day, maybe even swim with them! Do you remember Flipper?
I love dolphins, I got to pet one, when I was very young in Singapore. :)
Nice hub Phoenix. I love how dolphins are so graceful when they are swimming.
Great Hub PhoenixV
Dolphin's are extremely intelligent as you pointed out. While reading it reminded me of a movie called "Day of the Dolphin"...I think that's the name...Anyway, in the movie they are taught to communicate with humans and ultimately learn to speak...It's a pretty cool movie...
Thanks for sharing the great pics
Alternative Prime
I also remember Flipper and I always love watching TV programmes on these graceful creatures.
Thank you so much for sharing this hub. It was very enjoyable.
Take care.
very good summary on Dolphins...We took a trip to Bermuda last year and paid to swim with the Dolphins...A fantastic experience...thanks
One of my fondest experiences was the Dolphin Excursion at Sea World in Orlando. The class begins at 6am and instructors give a lesson on dolphins before you actually get into the water. It is awesome to put your arms around a 600 plus pound creature who swims up to you. Loved your hub about dolphins.
Thanks for the videos. Dolphins are fascinating creatures to study. I’m sure that there’s a lot more that researchers can learn about them.
The first animal that i loved.Flipper the dolphin on the Tv of 80's.
They certainly are fascinating!
Just saw a pod off the coast of Virginia. Beautiful creatures as well
Interesting hub
Great photos and videos! I was able to go in the water with some dolphins yesterday and it was an amazing experience. They are so intelligent and beautiful. Thanks for the hub!
I love dolphins and on our honeymoon there were two dolphins swimming in a large pool at the resort we stayed at on Hamilton Island. We were allowed to pet them but we were warned that they were wild animals and to be careful around them. No one was allowed to swim in that pool of course but one day I do hope to swim with dolphins. Thanks for this hub, really enjoyed the videos.
What beautiful, intelligent creatures. Your hub was very well researched and informative. Voted up, marked useful, awesome, beautiful and shared.
