I don't know a whole lot about it, but severe abdominal pain is one symptoms.  I know someone who ended up in the ER with awful pain.  He is ok though now.  It was like an "attack" of sorts.

The most common symptoms of diverticulitis include sudden and severe pain in the lower left side of the abdomen, fever, changes in bowel habits, nausea, vomiting and bloating.

Many people have diverticulitis. It is a weakness in the muscle fiber, where the colonic muscle had to work extremely hard to get the feces through the colon. then it ruptured and caused a hernia on the wall of the colon.  If you have pain in your lower abdoman after eating nuts, popcorn, things that are hard to diggest. It gets in those pouches and  makes the colon have pain when these foods get inside the pouches that are on the colon walls.  It is a weakness in the walls of the colon.  The best thing to be using to scrub all the debrie out of the colon is Metamucil, which is also known as Psyllium hulls,  and the herb cascara sagrada. Morbid matter accumulates in them.  They then fill up and become a place where infection can start.  It can become absessed, irritated and inflamed and very painful at times.  It really is a serious condition in which you should get some knowledge or help with the problem.  The sacs can become festered and ruptured if action isn't taken to start getting them cleaned out.  Then it can become life threatening. It can also create what is called autointoxication, which is a bowel that is not functioning correctly and produces in the body a situation of which are the main cause of many of our diseases and illnesses. The colon is usually where disease starts and spreads throughout the body. Some people are carrying from 25-50 or more pounds of fecal matter in their colon daily.  You might say how disgusting, but it is true.  I have books about it with pictures of the disgusting waste.  It is from the water we drink, the dyes and preservatives in our food and the unhealthy food that we eat. The processed foods in packages are full of chemicals. Also the chemicals we breath.  Hope this helps you.  You need to pay attention to this and take care of the problem. Go to a health food store and buy "Tissue Cleansing Through Bowel Management" by Dr. Bernard Jensen.
